The HP 8500 printer has a digital copier, a flatbed scanner, printing features and fax capabilities. The printer is an ink jet printer and the entire device is 19.4 inches wide by 18.9 inches in depth, by 13 inches in height. The HP Officejet Pro 8500 weighs 28 pounds, so it may seem a bit large until one realizes that a single device replaces four devices in a home office or business environment. This means that the HP 8500 is a practical device and one that the consumer will find impressively easy to use.

The HP 8500 is sold with the all in one printing device body, a black/yellow printing head, a cyan/magenta printing head, four different ink cartridges, the power cord, a telephone cord, a poster with easy set up instructions, and a full guide on how to get started using the HP Officejet Pro 8500. This printer is offered to the consumer with a CD-ROM for installing the necessary drivers into the Mac and Windows operating systems.

The HP Officejet Pro 8500 has 128 MB of onboard memory and it can support different flash memory like an SDHC card, and XD picture card, a MultiMedia card, a CompactFlash card, or a Memory Stick Pro card. This printer can copy as many as 35 pages per minute in monochrome format and 34 pages per minute in color format. The copying resolution of the HP Officejet Pro 8500 is the same for both black and white as well as color copying equaling 1200 x 600 dots per inch. Documents can be reduced to 25 percent or enlarged to 400 percent as the user defines. The HP 8500 can make 99 copies in one session, and the device is equipped with auto duplexing features.

The HP 8500 has a thermal inkjet printing system with a resolution of 1200 x 1200 to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. This device can print out up to 35 pages per minute in monochrome and 34 pages per minute in color. The HP 8500 is equipped with a CIS scan element, an 8 bit gray scale depth, and a 48 bit color depth. The optical resolution of the integrated scanner is equivalent to 2400 x 4800 dots per inch. Meanwhile, the HP Officejet Pro 8500 has an embedded compatible G3 fax with a 33.6 kbps fax transmission speed. Varying fax resolutions are supplied including 300 x 300, 203 x 196, and 203 x 98 dots per inch. The fax has 48 stations for broadcasting transmissions, there are delayed transmission features and add on faxing features include color faxing, forwarding, automated redial, junk fax barrier inclusions, and the inclusion of a distinctive ring pattern detection. In terms of connectivity, the HP 8500 offers quite a bit too; this device can be connected to IEEE 802.11b/802.11g or Ethernet 10 Base-T and High Speed USB connections.
